In an extension activity related to this week's Topic in Halacha, hadlakat neirot (lighting candles for Shabbat), students classified several scenarios according to the three reasons given for this mitzvah.
Honor Shabbat - Candle light provides a festive setting befitting Shabbat.

Enjoy Shabbat - The concept of oneg, enjoyment, is critical to the Shabbat experience. One cannot appreciate the special foods eaten in honor of Shabbat without proper lighting (especially in the days before electricity, when candle light was indispensable).
Create Peace - A well-lit home prevents mishaps and stumbling amidst the darkness, which would otherwise create tension and raw nerves on what should otherwise be a festive and relaxed day.
