Simanim: Special Foods for a Special Year

We introduced the simanim in our Rosh Hashanah unit this week. It is customary to eat foods on Rosh Hashanah that portend good things for the coming year, called simanim ("omens" or "signs"). Apples and honey are perhaps the best known simanim, but there several others that we examined as well.

Students viewed a PowerPoint presentation on the simanim, and then created a poem or creative essay based on this information. The creative writing also featured general information about each siman and a recipe that calls for each siman. Stop by our bulletin board to read them beginning Thursday!
