Water and Torah: Inseparable

Ever notice the half-dozen engravings that crop up around the beit midrash on campus? Each one expresses a comparison between water and the Torah. As a supplement to the episode we studied in Chumash (Yehudah is sent ahead to establish the first beit midrash in Egypt), we took a "walking tour" aroudnd the campus to learn about the various ways in which Torah and water are conceptually linked. Armed with clipboards and a keen eye, students collected"data" (the information from the carvings) and then reached a conclusion about the parallels between water and Torah. They include:
  • Water flows downstream; Torah "flows" to "low" people (i.e. humble)
  • Water is a necessity for survival; our survival as a Jewish nation hinges on Torah study
  • Water moves in a continuous flow; Torah study must occur frequently and consistently to produce measurable progress.
