Campus "Field Trip" - Laws of Sukkot

After students split up into chavrutot (partners) to review some of the pertinent laws related to the actual sukkah, we embarked on a field trip to see some of these laws in practice. Stops along the way helped us see "visuals" of several laws, including:
  • laws of the s'chach (must come from a natural product and be detached from the earth)
  • laws of the sukkah's walls (must be able to withstand normal winds)
  • location of the sukkah (can't be placed in a dangerous location or underneath something that blocks a view of the sky)

We also discussed the concept of taishvu k'ein taduru - that one must reside in the sukkah as he/she would in a regular residence. This concept teaches us to establish much of our daily activies - eating, relaxing, even sleepin - in the sukkah during the holiday. We discussed the extensions and limitations of this rule as well.
