Well, not exactly.
This week's parsha features the episode of "the tower of Bavel," in which a group of idolatrous people in Bavel challenge God's sovereignty by building a tower to reach the heavens. God thwarts their plans by imposing a language barrier between the men, such that no two people could communicate with the other.
To help the students grasp the significance of the story - that our words are powerful - I asked the class to organize themselves to complete a short and easy task. The catch: each person in the class was given a pre-assigned phrase in one of four foreign languages (Italian, French, Spanish and Portugese) and could only communicate with the other students using this phrase. Obviously, the students didn't get very far in their assignment!
The theme for this year is communication. The parsha presents yet another real-life example of how our words carry deep meaning. Something that is not communicated properly will not succeed.
