One of the better known disputes between Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai concerns the manner in which we light. Hillel maintains (and we follow in practice) that one candle is lit on the first night and one additional candle is added on subsequent nights. Shammai maintains that we begin with eight candles, and decrease on subsequent nights.
Students learned the rationale behind each opinion.
