Students know more than they think - sometimes, even more than we think!
In an effort to challenge our class to think more deeply about what they are learning, I now begin each Chumash lesson with a P3 - a short preview of the information we're about to learn, followed by independent textual study of the material and student-produced predictions about how to resolve questions that emerge from what they have learned.
After they reconvene as a group, we study the resolutions proposed by the meforshim (commentators) and compare their answers to those supplied by the class. More than once, a student's prediction matches exactly what is recorded by one of the commentators! This process promotes confidence building and deep understanding of what is being studied - two essential building blocks that will ultimately help the students become more independent learners.
