Kosher Fish - Myths Debunked!

A quick poll from today's class: "What makes a fish kosher?"

Our savvy kosher explorers responded: "Fins and scales!"

They were almost right.

We viewed a fabulous film from the Orthodox Union that debunked many of the myths associated with kosher fish, including:

  • "As long as the fish has scales, it is kosher" (they need to be visible and cannot break skin when removed)

  • "I cannot buy fish without kosher certification" (as long as the skin is intact and you can identify the scales)
  • "If the skin is removed, I cannot buy the fish, since its kosher status is unknown" (usually true, but a noteworthy exception is the salmon fish)

The video rounded out our unit on kosher fish. We'll incorporate a activity on kosher fish during our kosher scavenger hunt next week at Tom Thumb - more on that shortly...
