Tzedakah: An Inter-disciplinary unit

This week, we’ll focus on an inter-disciplinary unit on tzedakah, examining the topic from several perspectives:

Chumash - We’ll study the portion of the Torah that discusses the concept of tzedakah (Devarim 15). A textual study of Rashi will also be featured, as well as PowerPoint presentations on the themes of the pesukim (verses). (For students who are not yet proficient in reading Rashi’s unique “script” – a poll revealed that there are several among us – I will prepare guided “crib” sheets that will teach Rashi in only a few easy lessons.)

Dinim – We’ll study the laws of shemittah (the sabbatical year), which provides the backdrop for the Torah’s discussion of tzedakah. We’ll also explore issues related to the disbursing of charity, establishing priorities for giving, and examining the laws of ma’aser (donating a tenth of our income to charity).

Mishna – We’ll take a look at various mishnayot that discuss charity.

This holistic form of study will also feature profiles of great ba’alei tzedakah (exemplars) and will cap off with a tzedakah drive for a cause to be determined by our students.
