What Happens If Chametz Remains Over Pesach?

This question will frame the next segment of our pre-Pesach studies. After learning about the Torah's commandment to "remove" chametz from our possession ("tashbitu") and exploring the Mishna's perspective on how to do this (Pesachim 2:1), we know turn our attention to the issues that emerge if we fail to achieve (knowingly or unknowingly) this goal.

We'll explore the topic from the perspective of the Mishna (Pesachim 2:2) and reinforce with some case studies.

Some essential questions that students will chew over in the course of the lesson:
  • What is the meaning of chametz she'avar alav ha-Pesach?
  • What is the nature of this rule - punitive or pre-emptive?
  • Does the rule apply to all chametz? What about supermarkets?
